Blessed with a very pleasant climate and a diverse community, Sydney has the food to match. Sydneysiders appreciate good food and make it a regular shopping experience. A lot of it is grown locally and very fresh. Every area hosts its food market on a regular basis and it’s a good opportunity for visitors to experience the local lifestyle. So, I have selected 5 essential food markets in Sydney this summer.
Table of Contents
Carriageworks Farmers Markets
The CarriageWorks Farmers Markets offers a great selection of fresh foods from local growers. It was previously known as Eveleigh Farmers Markets and it is located in a large open hall next to the CarriageWorks. From fruit and vegetable, meat, handmade pasta, eggs to flowers, artisan bread and coffee, this market is a great opportunity to complete your weekly shop with quality produce. Every now and then, I pack my kitchen knives for sharpening and I always check out their flower selection.
The CarriageWorks Farmers Markets is open every Saturday.
EQ Village Market
The Entertainment Quarter at Fox Studios hosts the EQ Village Market, a growers market, every Wednesday and Saturday. I was very impressed with their selection of flowers. Although Wednesday morning was a little quiet, parking was plentiful, which is very handy.
Orange Grove Organic Markets
Located in Rozelle, the Orange Grove Organic Markets is rich in fresh, healthy food, and is a colourful experience. Furthermore, there is an excellent selection of organic meats.
The Orange Grove Organic Markets is open every Saturday. I recommend getting there early as they rely on off-street parking.
Sydney Fish Markets
The Sydney Fish Markets are a must when you visit Sydney, as much as the Opera House or the Harbour Bridge. It’s a working fish marketplace, with fishing vessels docked out the front. Many retailers offer the option to consume seafood onsite, so it’s a great place to go for lunch. It’s a bustling marketplace with produce sold in bulk and delivered. There are non-seafood shops, such as a Fruit & Vegetable market and a butcher. Also, it has a bakery, wine shop and an Italian Deli.
The Sydney Fish Markets is earmarked for a renovation and a move in the next couple of years.
Paddy’s Market
Paddy’s Market is located at Haymarket, in the heart of Chinatown, inside a large hall. It’s a direct extension of the Flemington Markets and the selection of fresh fruit and vegetable is unbeatable. It’s more a working market, with less of the coffee/weekend stroll experience, but if you’re planning a big dinner party, the selection and prices are excellent. As the traders come directly from Flemington, they have a very good knowledge of what’s available in season. Generally, if something is not available at Paddy’s Market, it’s unlikely anyone else would have it.
Paddy’s Market opens from Wednesday to Sunday and has longer opening hours, from 10am to 6pm.
I also have a selection of cool and hip markets in Sydney. The Beaches Market is also worth visiting and if you are into handmade products, don’t miss the Finders Keepers market.
