Sculpture by the Sea

In almost fourteen years living in Sydney, I had never visited the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition. So, this year, I decided to go on the first day in order to get the first impressions. The coastal walk from Bondi to Tamarama is spectacular and well worth doing, and this exhibition pays great compliment to the location.

The Sydney coast is famously beautiful and there are many beaches to choose from.

Sculpture by the Sea in Sydney

The walk is about 2 kilometres long, starting from Hunter Park in Bondi and I found it quite easy. However, there are some places with stairs so check before you go if accessibility is a concern.

The exhibition was created in 1997 and celebrated its 20th anniversary this year. Sculpture by the Sea has become one of Australia’s more popular events and is a free to the public exhibition. It showcases some 100 sculptures by artists from around the world.

I found it to be a great opportunity to combine a leisurely walk with the enjoyment of stunning coastal views and some interesting contemporary art. I have to say, the art work is far better served in a natural setting than in a museum…

Art work in this limitless space seems to be allowed to expand and is open to your own imagination’s interpretation.

I think I will look at sculpture very differently from now on.

I am fascinated by textures and colours.

How to get there

The website has some very good indications on how to get there. The easiest way is to go by public transport. I parked at Bondi Junction and took a bus to Bondi Beach (330/380/381). The ride was about 10 minutes to the beginning of Campbell Parade. The walk down Bondi Road from Bondi Junction is only 3 kms if you prefer.

On the way back, I took a bus from Tamarama to Bondi Junction (361)

There is very little parking nearby and some road closures so I parked at Bondi Junction and used public transport, it was only a 10 minute bus ride.

I really enjoyed this visit. It certainly draws crowds but it’s a very nice addition to the Sydney landscape.
